couldnt import org.apache.xerces.parsers.*

Hi,
  I have installed xerces on my PC, which has created a folder named
xerces-2_4_0 in my home directory, but then also on compiling any java
program, it gives me error as package org.apache.xerces.parsers does
not exist.What could be the possible reasons for it?
